Services in Katuns and Villages

The Pešter highland and the villages on its slopes are inextricably linked. They are situated one after another as you pass along the Katun road. Therefore, the services on Katun Road are intertwined.

Lađevac Katun

Lađevac is situated at the altitude of 1,565 meters and it’s made of vast pastures. It is an ideal place for cattle breeding. Locals go to the katun in mid-May and they stay up there until the snow. Lađevac katun is also a home for the family Ećo. Brothers Tahir and Kemal offer tourist services together with their families. They will teach you everything you need to know about the life in the katun and everyday activities. If you visit them on August 2, when a traditional Lađevac fair takes place, you can take part in traditional sport activities, such as shot put (throwing stone from a fixed standing position) or horse riding. There is a camp nearby, and you can also stay there and be close to the household.

Crno vrelo

Crno vrelo katun is situated not far away from Lađevac and Pločnik. It is an ideal place for a holiday, being so hidden and tucked away. While there, you should definitely try all the homemade delicacies made by the families who stay at the katun during summer. You won’t regret it. You can also camp here, in a secluded valley of the katun.

Pločnik katun

Pločnik katun is situated at the altitude of 1,560 meters. This is the katun with the largest number of farms on Pešter, probably. The cattle breeders financed electrification of the katun themselves, in order to make their stay easier. You can buy traditional products from them, such as cheese, clotted cream and honey, as well as high-quality lamb and veal.

Gradina katun

This katun is situated along the old caravan road, at around 1,700 meters above sea level. Expansive areas of pastures offer some great conditions for the cattle breeders of the region. Family Ratković is stationed here and they have got 40 animals and produce high – quality cheese and clotted cream. A large number of peaks with outstanding views is located nearby, as well as the remnants of Jerina’s town.

Honsića katun

Honsića katun, situated close to Musa’s pit site, is home of the households from the village also called Honsić, municipality of Rožaje. They stay in the katun from May to November, with their cattle of course, and they are the favorites of domestic and foreign guests. The katun is set right next to the caravan road and their offer includes homemade food. You should taste some traditional delicacies and freshen up with homemade beverages before you continue your journey.

Vlahovi katun

Vlahovi is one of the katuns set along the caravan road. Its scenery is breathtaking. It is situated in the midst of a beautiful landscape of pastures and coniferous trees, very cushy for cattle breeders and their herds.

Pučpolje katun

Pučpolje katun is situated above the Petnjica’s village Kalica. This is the katun of two families, Osmanović and Muratović, and they stay up there with their cattle until November. Muratović family offers homemade food and accommodation in traditional shepherd’s huts. You can experience a true katun life if you visit them, and give them a hand in everyday katun activities.

Turjak katun

If you take the old road from Rožaje to Petnjica, you will come upon a katun called Turjak, which is located close to the monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers from 1947. Cikotić family stays on the katun from May to November. Their offer includes traditional homemade products (cheese, clotted cream), as well as some specialties. You can also camp there and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Štedim katun

Štedim is the name of the mountain and the mountainous region in the north-eastern part of the Prokletije range, settled at the border area of Montenegro and Kosovo, south of Rožaje.  A mountain lodge called Štedim is located close to the katun, you can book accommodation in it and taste homemade food prepared by the members of the mountain club “Ahmica”. If you are a fan of peak climbing, this is an ideal place for you. There are many mountain trails leading from the katun to the nearby border peaks: Ahmica (Štedim) 2,272 m, Ujkin krš 2,082 m, Maja e Kralanit 2,035 m, Maja e Zezë (Maja e Zez / Crni vrh) 2,111 m, Crni vrh (kod G. Bukelja) 1,923 m.

Dolovi katun

Cattle breeding families from the municipality of Berane, Lutovac, Bojović and Kljajić, stay in this katun. They all have traditional products (cheese, clotted cream) included in their offer, and they are widely known for their katun cheese. Beside homemade delicacies, they also offer accommodation in traditional objects (huts, cottage, logs). Experience the unforgettable katun life with one of these families.

Prisojački katun

One branch of the katun road from Pešter to Bjelasica leads across Trešnjevik towards Prisojački katun, situated 1,750 meters above sea level. There are several families staying here from May to November, together with their cattle. Their villages are really close, so you can find them there, too. And, when they are not in villages, you can try their specialties: cheese, clotted cream, layered cheese, homemade ham and vegetables they grow. Everything is of top-quality and a real treat.

Katun also offers accommodation in traditional shepherd’s huts so you can make a break here and charge your batteries for further exploration of Komovi and Bjelasica.

Bačko brdo katun

Bačko brdo katun is located between the mountains of Komovi and Bjelasica, and the cattle breeders from the municipalities of Andrijevica and Kolašin stay there. You can camp here, try some homemade delicacies with local katun families. If you visit during the summer, you will discover the secret of harvesting mushrooms and picking blueberries, the things these families are famous for in the region.

Krivi do katun

A large number of cattle breeders are situated close to the mountain lodge, and they stay in this katun, with the largest numbers of cattle on Bjelasica. Beside accommodation in the mountain lodge, you can also stay in wooden huts with Dukić family or the stone house of Zeković family. Both families offer homemade food and traditional delicacies, as well as additional katun activities. Experience the true shepherd’s life or visit the mountain on horseback, or both. It is up to you what to decide.

Vrševo, Petnjica

Tufo and Bisa Ajdarpašić live in the village of Vrševo, municipality of Petnjica. Tufo is a bee keeper, and everyone who is into bee keeping, owns an orchard, these two always go hand in hand. If you visit them in autumn, you will be able to pick many fruits, and the honey from this altitude is a real mountain one, rich in flavor and high-quality, because bees feed well. The road leading to Vrševo may seem complicated, but don’t give up, because once you climb there and reach the hill summit, you get to enjoy a magnificent view. You will be greeted by Bisa, with a large smile on her face, breathless from the kitchen works, where she was preparing different traditional dishes and delicacies in order to welcome you, as it is a custom here. And all her dishes are perfect. The house is old, recently renovated, with a terrace under the house, covered but open on all the sides, so that you can, while enjoying in Bisa’s specialties, also enjoy the perfect view.

Bor, Petnjica

Porodica Adrović is one of the few young families who decided to tie their lives to the village. And, they don’t regret it. They are engaged in husbandry, and Almir has also decided to begin with meat processing activities in traditional way, so you will be able to try a beef prosciutto and dried and smoked lamb, produced as they had been produced for centuries here. The fact that both of these products have been awarded the Protected Geographical Indication and they have been introduced in the National Quality Schemes, speaks volumes of their quality. Almir actively participated in the process of getting the awards, and he is the head of the association which gathers the similar producers. Adrović family lives in the village of Bor, with their four children and they are all very active on the farm.

Grahovača, Rožaje

Ten kilometers from the main road which goes through Rožaje is the distance you will have to travel to reach the Hadžić household – a place called Sastanci, in the settlement of Grahovača. Do not let these 10 kilometers be too far, because they are not, and you will regret it if you don’t visit this household. The scenery is stunning, far away from hustle and bustle, and possibilities for walks are numerous. You can also spend the night in this household, and we warmly recommend it as a base for further exploration of Rožaje.

Lokve, Berane

Guberinić family lives in the village called Budimlja during the winter period, and in May, the complete household moves to the katun Mušino brdo and they stay there till October. This katun is located close to the famous ski resort Lokve. There are three generations living in the household, and their main activity is the production of milk and dairy products, primarily cheese, which is produced using traditional methods. Beside this, they are engaged in the production of fruit and vegetables. You will get to try different types of juices and jams in this household, and if you visit them at the right period, you can take part in preparing winter stores and other specialties.  You can stay longer here because the family Guberinić offers accommodation, too.

Kukulje, Bijelo Polje

Ćatović family is situated in the village of Kukolje, and the road there is a bit complicated (thus the name of the village probably – zakukuljeno – complicated), so we would recommend to use the map. You won’t regret it once you reach there – we can guarantee that. You will find yourself on the top of a hill, with the entire river Lim valley laying in front of you, almost as if it is in the palm of your hand, and, when you raise your head, you will see the Pester highland, set right across of where you stand. There are several objects on their farm, some traditional, some recent, but they are all blended into a picturesque ensemble, where every piece has its purpose.

Vlah, Bijelo Polje

Đalović household is situated in the village of Vlah, above the famous Bistrica, and the entire household faces towards the Đalović gorge, where the well-known cave is hidden, the largest and the most mysterious one in Montenegro. Đalović family are excellent hosts, they know the history of the region and their family well, and they will share some beautiful stories with you, stories that can introduce you to the culture and history of the area. When food is in question, we wouldn’t know what to recommend, everything we tried was great, high-quality dishes, served with a smile, it’s just that the atmosphere in this family is such that you will be happy to share at least one day with them.

Tomaševo, Bijelo Polje

Pešić family lives in the village called Tomaševo, and they are one of few families that moved to a village from a town, and started their work in agricultural activities from a scratch. They are engaged in husbandry; they have got around forty animals that demand everyday care. Everything here is dedicated to cattle, it has to be like that, and you will step into mud, or some kind of fertilizer, or hay – that is what life looks like when 40 animals are somewhere on the farm.

They still don’t have accommodation in their offer, but they have plans to include it in the future. They are situated close to the Novaković cave, on the old road from Bijelo Polje to Pljevlja, right on the panoramic route, and they are an excellent spot for having lunch or product tasting, especially of Vraneš layered and rolled cheese.
